Hyundai Ioniq 6 for Malaysia has a longer range than the Tesla Model Y

Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV will be making its official debut in Malaysia on 21 July. The launch date was revealed by Hyundai Sime Darby Motors through its Facebook and Instagram pages. The confirmation came seven months after Hyundai Sime Darby Motors first teased the EV’s arrival into our market.

Ioniq 6 Long Range RWD is coming to Malaysia

We have been wondering whether the long-range variant of Ioniq 6 will be making its way to Malaysia. Based on two previously published social media teasers, it seems that the answer is a yes. As shown above, the teaser talked about saying goodbye to range anxiety and the ability to drive from Taiping to Johor Bahru on a single charge exceeding 600km.

Equipped with a 77.4kWh battery pack, the Ioniq 6 Long Range RWD variant has a WLTP range of 614km. This model also comes with a single electric motor pushing 168kW (228hp) and 350Nm of torque, which is similar to the RWD Hyundai Ioniq 5 Lite and Plus variants.

In addition to that, it is also able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.4 seconds and it maxes out at 185km/h.

As a comparison, the Tesla Model Y Long Range variant which is already available for booking in Malaysia, has a WLTP range of just 533km. That being said, the Tesla Model Y Long Range with twin motors is more powerful and quicker since it can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 5 seconds and has a top speed of 217km/h.

How much will the Ioniq 6 Long Range RWD cost in Malaysia?

With the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Max currently being priced at RM270,408, we reckon that the Ioniq 6 Long Range RWD could be priced at more than RM300,000. After all, the Ioniq 6 is being positioned as a higher-end model than the Ioniq 5.

If our prediction is accurate, this means that this model could be competing directly with the Kia EV6 GT-Line. Depending on how Hyundai Sime Darby Motors priced the variant, it may have some advantage over Kia’s offering though.

While the EV6 GT-Line comes with the same 77.4kWh battery capacity, the model has a much lower WLTP range at 506km. Not only that, its price tag has recently been increased from RM300,668 to RM319,668.

So, what about Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD? Even though its range rating is not as massive as the Ioniq 6, its price tag of RM247,700 (inclusive of delivery & administration, number plate, and order fees) is significant in addition to its century sprint timing, top speed, and more powerful motor output.

However, Hyundai Sime Darby Motors may already have some Ioniq 6 stocks ready for launch. This means early adopters of the Ioniq 6 may be able to get their hands on the EV very soon, unlike the Tesla Model Y which will only take delivery in early 2024.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 AWD model also coming to Malaysia

The Ioniq 6 will also be offered in a more powerful AWD option as Hyundai Sime Darby Motors has also shared teasers of 605Nm of torque and a quicker 0-100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds. This version gets dual motors pushing 239kW (325hp) and 605Nm of torque and the ability to go from 0 to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.

Of course, having extra firepower means you have to sacrifice some driving range on a full charge. Nevertheless, the Ioniq 6 AWD is still able to deliver a better range than the base model at 583km according to the WLTP standards. Like the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 also gets an 800V architecture and it can do 10-80% charge in just 18 minutes when plugged into a 350kW DC fast charger.
