Tune Talk now offers Pocket WiFi rental, from RM8 per day

Tune Talk is expanding its travel offering with its new Pocket WiFi rental which starts from RM8 per day. Similar to various Pocket WiFi providers, this is a service where you can rent a MiFi device that lets you stay connected in over 140 countries via a WiFi hotspot.

Tune Talk Pocket WiFi rental starts from RM8/day

Depending on the destination, the rates start from as low as RM8/day and it offers “unlimited” data that comes with a specified high-speed data quota. Once you’ve hit your high-speed quota, you can continue using the internet but at a slower throttled speed. The cheapest data offering is in Asia where you can get connected in several countries including Singapore, Japan and Korea for RM8/day for the base data option.

If you’re going to Singapore, Tune Talk Pocket Wifi offers several options which include RM12/day for 1GB high-speed quota (unlimited 512kbps after throttled), RM20/day for 5GB high-speed data (unlimited 1Mbps after throttled) and RM36/day for 10GB high-speed data (unlimited 256kbps after throttled).

Interestingly, there’s a redundant Basic, Standard and Premium option which appears to be the same offering but at a lower price. For example, the 1GB plan is going for RM8/day which comes with 1GB high-speed data followed by unlimited 512kbps. The next option is RM12/day for 5GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited 1Mbps and then RM22/day for 10GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited 256kbps. These same plans are also available for Japan and Korea.

At the time of writing, it appears that you can only book the Pocket WiFi on per per-country basis and there’s no global plan option which lets you stay connected worldwide in a single pass.

Take note that the Pocket WiFi are currently available for pick-up at KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 from the Tune Talk counter. There’s also a deposit required upfront which costs RM100. So if you’re planning to rent a Pocket WiFi with 1GB high-speed data for 4 days (RM8 x4), it will cost you RM132 upfront including the RM100 deposit.

Tune Talk has indicated that the Pocket WiFi pick-up points will soon be expanded to Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Penang International Airport.

In order to view the rental rates and to book a Pocket WiFi, you’ll need to download the Tune Talk Pocket WiFi app which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. According to the FAQ, the Pocket WiFi’s battery can last up to 12 hours and you can use it to share with up to 8 devices.

Is it worth it to get Pocket WiFi or roam with your plan?

If you’re going to travel for several days and through multiple countries, it would probably be more convenient and worthwhile to activate a data roaming plan with your current telco. Most telcos these days offer a 30-day multi-country roaming pass for about RM95-RM99/month or a shorter weekly unlimited pass within ASEAN. These monthly data roaming passes offer “unlimited” data roaming with 2GB FUP per day which is more than enough for most users.

There are also several postpaid plans which offer free monthly Roam Like Home data such as Celcom Mega 188, Digi and U Mobile. By using your home SIM to roam, you don’t need to fumble about picking up and returning a Pocket WiFi. The monthly unlimited data pass also provides greater peace of mind as you can roam virtually anywhere including the country you’re transiting.
