Time offers shorter 12-month fibre broadband contract for renters

If you’re staying in a rented home, Time has introduced new fibre broadband options with a shorter 12-month contract. Unlike its previous “No contract” option which requires a one-time upfront payment, the new 12-month option has a lower barrier to entry as Time is providing free WiFi 6 router and installation.

Time Fibre Broadband 12-month contract

According to Time, finding a broadband plan with a contract period that matches rental agreements can be tricky and the new shorter 12-month plan aims to match perfectly with yearly rental leases. This helps consumers enjoy uninterrupted internet throughout their tenure and avoid the risk of paying hefty termination fees if they need to terminate.

Typically, most fibre broadband providers would make you pay the full subscription fees for the remaining months if you cancel before the end of the contract.

On a 12-month contract, Time’s 200Mbps fibre plan costs RM119/month while the 600Mbps plan costs RM159/month. The highest option available is 1Gbps that’s going for RM219/month.

The 200Mbps plan has an upload speed of 200Mbps, while the 600Mbps and 1Gbps plans offer 500Mbps uploads. If you need to relocate to a new address, Time offers free relocation once you’ve finished your 12-month contract.

All three plan options come with a free WiFi 6 router, while the 1Gbps option comes with an additional WiFi 6 Mesh worth RM599.

Comparison versus 24-month and contract-less option

If we compare the 12-month contract versus the 24-month contract, you are essentially paying an additional RM20 per month. On the standard 24-month fibre broadband contract offering, the 200Mbps plan is going for RM99/month while the 600Mbps plan is offered for RM139/month. Meanwhile, the 1Gbps plan is going for RM199/month and the higher 2Gbps option is going for RM379/month.

However, if you go with the “No contract” option, you can enjoy the same low monthly subscription as the 24-month plan. However, you are required to fork out between RM400 to RM800 for one-time installation charges and equipment.

If we do the math (excluding applicable taxes), a 12-month subscription for 200Mbps on the “No contract” option will cost you RM1,588 inclusive of monthly fees and a one-time charge. But on the new 12-month contract option, the total cost for 12 months would be RM1,428, which is RM160 cheaper.

Of course, the best value is to go with a 24-month contract if you’re able to do so with your current accommodation.
