First launched in April 2023, the XPeng G6 is a crossover electric SUV that can deliver a CLTC-rated range of up to 755km and is expected to be one of the first models that XPeng will release in Malaysia. We recently noticed that XPeng Malaysia’s official website is now online which we believe is a sign that the EV will be making its local debut very soon.
You may have to squint your eyes a little, but you should be able to spot Bermaz XPeng Sdn Bhd’s name in the website’s footer section:
At the moment, the website is still empty and only shows a large XPeng logo with text that says “A New Dawn in Electric Refinement”. The teaser also hinted that more details will be unveiled soon.
Meanwhile, the Facebook and Instagram pages of XPeng Malaysia are now online as well. They contained the same teaser as per the website although XPeng Malaysia has set one of the XPeng G6’s press photos as its Facebook header image.
XPeng partnered with Bermaz to establish its presence in Malaysia
Bermaz is known by many as the company that is responsible for Kia and Mazda in Malaysia. The company previously handled Peugeot as well but the baton has since been passed back to the French automaker’s parent company, Stellantis earlier this year.
So, some may see XPeng as the replacement for Peugeot in Bermaz’s portfolio. That being said, the nature of the Chinese company is slightly different given its focus on electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and flying cars.
However, don’t expect many units to be available in Malaysia at first. In a recent interview with The Edge, Bermaz Group’s CEO Francis Lee Kok Chuan said that the company is not planning to bring a lot of G6 to the market as XPeng has agreed to take a slow and steady approach to the Malaysian market.
“It’s about making sure the brand is well recognised [in the market] and that people want to buy the car, rather than bringing in a huge volume and then waiting to see how well your car is going to do [in the market],” – Francis Lee Kok Chuan, Group CEO, Bermaz.
XPeng G6 quick specs
The G6 together with the 7-seater electric MPV, X9 are the first group of products that XPeng has converted to the right-hand drive (RHD) setup. Both models have just made their debut in Hong Kong with Sime Darby Motors (yes, that Malaysian automotive giant) being appointed as XPeng’s distributor over there.
With a price tag that currently starts at CNY199,900 (~RM129,828), the G6 offers a CLTC-rated range of between 580km and 755km. The variants with single motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup offer a maximum output of 218kW (292hp) and peak torque of 440Nm alongside a 0 to 100km/h timing that is as low as 5.9 seconds.
On the other hand, the G6 with dual-motor AWD setup has a maximum power output of 358kW (480hp) together with 660Nm of peak torque. Naturally, this version also can accelerate from o to 100km/h much faster at 3.9 seconds.
Given the popularity of crossover SUV form factor in Malaysia, the G6 could be a great addition to the sub-RM200k EV market. Of course, the price must be right if XPeng and Bermaz want the G6 to stand a chance going against the likes of BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5, let alone the Tesla Model Y.
