Report: Apple to launch 4 new AirPods this September, including 2 new “base” AirPods

Apple is reported to launch three new earbuds and one new headphone under its AirPods lineup at its upcoming September 2024 event, alongside the iPhone 16 series. The former includes two new “base” AirPods and a new AirPods Pro model, according to a report by Bloomberg.

4th-gen AirPods series to feature 2 models, one of them featuring ANC

The upcoming “base” AirPod models are said to be replacements for the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 that are currently still available on Apple’s shelves and will feature more affordable price tags. This positions them under the AirPods Pro series.

The higher-end model of the two is expected to feature active noise cancellation (ANC), marking the first time the feature is offered in a more affordable earbud model. But unlike the AirPods Pro, the upcoming AirPods 4 models are rumoured to not come with silicone ear tips.

Apple’s H2 chip is also expected to be featured in the new AirPod models, along with Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. As for arguably the most important update, the fourth-generation AirPods should be coming with USB-C ports, replacing Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector.

Not only can you charge the AirPods 4 via a USB-C cable or a Qi wireless charger, the case of the new earbuds are expected to support charging via an Apple Watch charger as well. The latter charging method was first introduced with the second-generation AirPods Pro.

New AirPods Pro to come with improved ANC

As for the refreshed AirPods Pro, it’s expected to receive new firmware with the scheduled release of iOS 18, granting the noise-cancelling earbuds new head gesture controls. This includes nodding to answer a call or shaking to decline. Speaking of noise cancellation, the upcoming AirPods Pro is expected to be improved in this regard as well.

AirPods Max to finally get its first update after 3 years?

The current-generation AirPods model that has been around for the longest time is the AirPods Max, making it nearly four years old, having made its launch in December 2020. Although it’s rumoured to get an update this September, it’s still unknown what upgrades this upcoming over-ear headphone will bring.

Apple has been slowly equipping many of its products with USB-C ports to comply with European regulations. Therefore it won’t be surprising for the new AirPods Max to have its Lightning connector swapped out for the more modern and universal port.

The second-gen AirPods Max could also feature Apple’s latest H2 chip along with Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity for faster and more reliable connection, better power efficiency, and longer battery life. To help keep the over-ear headphones looking fresh, new colour options could be introduced with the over-ear headphones as well.

So, if you’re planning to get yourself a new pair of AirPods, we would highly suggest you to wait and see what Apple has in store for us in the next month or so before making your final decision.
