Warner Bros. Discovery will be launching Max in Southeast Asia including Malaysia on 19th November 2024. It’s a new video streaming service (formerly known as HBO Max) which will replace HBO Go and they have finally revealed its subscription plans and pricing for the Malaysian market.
The streaming service offers a collection of blockbuster movies, TV series, lifestyle and documentary content from popular brands like HBO, Harry Potter, the DC Universe, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Discovery, AFN, HGTV and more.
Here’s everything you need to know including subscription pricing and the transition plan for existing HBO Go users in Malaysia.
How much to subscribe Max in Malaysia?
Max will be available in two plan options – Standard and Ultimate. You can subscribe monthly or sign up for an annual plan where you can save up to 33%. Here’s the pricing for the Max streaming service in Malaysia:
- Standard – RM34.90 (Monthly), RM279.90 (Yearly)
- Ultimate – RM52.90 (Monthly), RM424.90 (Yearly)
For the Max Standard plan, users can stream on two devices simultaneously in Full HD resolution. Meanwhile, the Ultimate plan allows users to stream on four devices simultaneously in higher 4K UHD resolution with Dolby Atmos.
Both plans allow you to stream on all devices including smartphones, tablets, computers, streaming players and TVs. When it comes to offline content, Standard users are limited to 30 downloads while Ultimate offers 100 downloads.
In some other markets (Indonesia and Philippines) and with select providers in Malaysia and Thailand, there’s also a cheaper Mobile Plan option. The Max Mobile plan allows streaming on a single smartphone or tablet in HD 720p resolution and up to 15 offline downloads. So far there’s no pricing yet but we reckon that it might be offered as a bundle by selected local telcos.
What happens to HBO Go users in Malaysia?
On 19th November 2024, the HBO Go app will be replaced with the new Max app and all existing subscriptions will become Max subscribers. After the switch, existing HBO Go users can log in to Max using their existing account email and password.
Users who haven’t signed in to HBO Go in the last 2 months are advised to sign out and then sign back in again so that it will be easier to sign in to Max once it is officially available. HBO Go users are advised to watch out for an email for more info about Max.
In terms of subscription pricing, it is mentioned that there won’t be any immediate changes to your subscription price if you subscribe via an app store or directly through the HBO Go website. However, if you subscribe to HBO Go through a TV or telco provider, you will be notified if there are any price changes.
As a reference, HBO Go currently costs RM34.90 per month or RM89.90 for a 3-month plan.
