Government to maintain 50% toll discount for festive seasons throughout 2025

The government will continue to implement 50% discounts on tolls during festive seasons throughout this year. The new policy was revealed by the Works Minister, Alexander Nanta Linggi during a working visit to the Federal Route FT05 Sungai Besar – Sabak Bernam earlier today.

The 50% discount on toll fares was first implemented for two days during the recent Chinese New Year. The discount was only applicable to Class 1 vehicles and the cost to the government was estimated to be around RM20 million.

Is this a stopgap or a permanent implementation?

Even though Alexander said that the Cabinet has decided to retain the policy for other major festive seasons throughout 2025, it is unclear at the moment whether this policy is a permanent replacement for the previous toll-free travel approach.

Alexander has previously said that the government wanted to replace the previous toll-free travel policy with a “more targeted approach” but did not reveal any details at that time. Naturally, the new policy will significantly reduce the amount of payment that the government has to pay to the toll concessionaires.

Last year, the government had to fork out over RM200 million in order to implement toll-free travel during Chinese New Year, Hair Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, and Christmas.
