The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has shared the latest vehicle registration data and EVs continue to show growth despite the softer overall market situation. The Proton e.MAS 7 continues to maintain its lead as the #1 EV model in Malaysia, while BYD is still the #1 EV brand in Malaysia.
According to the latest data, a total of 2,792 EVs were registered in July 2025 which is down from 3,272 units registered in June 2025. Despite the month-to-month decline, the July figures show a 48.2% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth from 1,884 units registered in July 2024.
Meanwhile, a total of 19,935 EVs were registered in Malaysia between January to July 2025, which is a 58.9% Year-to-Date (YTD) growth from 12,547 units registered between January to July 2024.

Besides EVs, hybrids are showing growth of 16.75% YoY from 2,119 units in July 2024 to 2,474 units in July 2025. Meanwhile, registrations for petrol, green diesel and diesel have declined for the month of July.
Overall, Malaysia’s total vehicle registrations have declined by 1.77% YoY, and 3.15% for YTD.
Top 30 EV models in Malaysia for July 2025

The Proton e.MAS 7 continues to retain its title as the most popular EV in Malaysia for July 2025 at #1 with 686 units. This is followed by the BYD Atto 3 at #2 with 355 units and BYD Sealion 7 at #3 with 278 units.
Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y has dropped one place to #4 with 151 units, while the BYD M6 takes the #5 spot with 117 units registered.
Some notable changes include the Leapmotor C10 which has jumped to the #9 spot with 66 units registered. The new BYD Atto 2 has made its debut at #10 with 63 units registered, while the MGS5 EV is at #12 with 55 units registered last month.
Top 30 EV models in Malaysia from January to July 2025

For the first 7 months of 2025, the Proton e.MAS 7 is still the most popular EV model with a total of 4,689 units registered so far. That also means there’s still opportunity for new buyers to enjoy the RM4,000 launch rebate which has been extended to the first 6,000 users.
The next popular EV model is the BYD Sealion 7 at #2 with 2,238 units registered, followed by the BYD Atto 3 at #3 with 2,056 units.
The list continues with the Tesla Model Y taking the #4 spot with 1,722 units, followed by the BYD M6 at #5 with 1,094 units and the Tesla Model 3 at #6 with 930 units.
When it comes to premium fully electric MPVs, the Denza D9 is the most popular at the moment with 718 units registered so far, followed by the Zeekr 009 with 498 units and the Xpeng X9 with 314 units.
Top 20 EV Brands in Malaysia from January to July 2025

As expected, BYD continues to be the #1 EV brand in Malaysia with a total of 6,270 units registered so far. If we include its premium sub-brand Denza, that’s a combined 6,988 units registered for the first 7 months of 2025, which represents 35% market share.
Meanwhile, Proton still holds on to its #2 spot with a single EV model and it has registered 4,689 units which presents 23.52% market share. Tesla is still the third most popular EV brand in Malaysia with a total of 2,653 units.
BMW at #4 is still Malaysia’s most popular premium EV brand with a total of 1,021 units registered in 2025 so far. For the entire BMW Group including the Mini brand, it has registered 1,394 units.
