Fastest EV at Malaysia’s First EV Track Day: Tesla Model 3 Performance Sets 2:34 at Sepang

The record for Malaysia’s fastest EV lap around Sepang International Circuit now belongs to a Tesla Model 3 Performance, set during the SoyaCincau EV Clinic: Track Edition. This was Malaysia’s first EV track day open to the public, with close to 30 participants bringing their cars for parade laps, taxi rides and open track sessions.

Behind the wheel of a Tesla Model 3 Performance, driver Ee Shedden set a best lap of 2:34.344, making it the fastest EV of the event and third fastest overall. Only a Porsche 911 GT3 (2:32.190) and a Honda Civic Type R FK8 (2:32.541) went quicker.

It has to be said though, that lap times at Sepang are never just about the car. The driver makes the difference. On this night Ee’s pace and confidence delivered, which is why the Tesla ended up mixing with established track machinery. The comparison is context, not proof that the cars have suddenly swapped places.

Also, the Tesla Model 3 Performance wasn’t exactly stock. Exotic Mods put together a package that addressed the weak spots of a stock Tesla on track: braking, suspension and tyres.

Upgrades fitted include:

• GAB 6-pot forged brake system
• EMP Track Version coilover suspension
• EMP stainless steel braided brake hoses
• Nankang AR-1 track-focused tyres

With this setup the Tesla managed a best straight-line speed of 205.7 km/h down Sepang’s straights. Not the fastest top speed of the night, but enough when paired with consistent braking and cornering. Exotic Mods also noted the lap was set at around 50% state of charge, which means the car was not running at peak output. Lower charge levels can reduce available power, so there may still be more time to be found.

For added context, the pre-facelift Model 3 Performance runs dual motors with around 460 hp and 660 Nm in right-hand drive markets like Hong Kong, the UK, and Australia. That’s good for 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 3.3 to 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 261 km/h.

This was the first EV track day in Malaysia open to the public, and the turnout showed that EV ownership is no longer just about worrying over charging points or range figures. Seeing a Tesla post a 2:34 lap at Sepang alongside hot hatches and GT cars signalled a shift in perception. EVs are beginning to find their place in the enthusiast space here.

The EV Clinic: Track Edition also featured parade laps, taxi rides in cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and MG Cyberster, battery health checks, and free DC charging courtesy of EV Connection. With sponsors including Tenaga Nasional, Trapo, Tesmods and FTuned Racing, it marked the start of something new – having EVs on circuit.

And with a Tesla now holding the unofficial title as Malaysia’s fastest EV at Sepang, the next question is simple. Who is going to try and beat it?
