Sarawak which is one of the least developed states when it comes to EV charging infrastructure has just connected a missing link for long distance travel. Gentari and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) have just deployed a 180kW DC Charger in Bintulu which is the first DC charger in the gas town.
The new charger in Bintulu comes almost two years after Gentari x SEB deployed their first EV charging station in Kuching which consists of 180kW DC charger and a 50kW DC Charger.

The 180kW DC Charger deployed by Gentari x SEB is located at the Town Square in Bintulu. From the photos, it looks like an Exicom DC charger unit with two CCS2 nozzles.
The charger is priced at RM1.40 per kWh which is similar to Gentari x SEB’s DC chargers at ICOM Square in Kuching. At the moment, only SEB EV chargers are offering kWh-based pricing in Sarawak, while other EV chargers are using time-based rate.

With the new DC Charger in Bintulu, EV owners in Sarawak can travel between Sibu to Miri with ease as they can make a quick top up in Bintulu.
What’s needed now is a DC charger between Kuching and Sibu, to enable a seamless and range anxiety-free travel from Kuching to Miri. More EV infrastructure is needed especially for EVs with less than 400km of range. An upcoming Gentari x SEB DC Charger was spotted in Simanggang, which will make the travel even easier.
