Following the rollout of dedicated female coaches on major rail networks, Malaysia is pushing to extend its commuter safety initiatives into the private ehailing sector.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the ministry is actively encouraging ehailing operators to introduce specialised options allowing female passengers to request female drivers.
The initiative aims to provide female commuters with a safer and more comfortable travel environment across both public rail and private ride hailing services.
Loke proposes women only Grab carpooling
Speaking at the Wanita DAP congress yesterday, Loke revealed that he urged Grab to expand its newly introduced carpooling features to offer a dedicated option for female users.
Under his proposal, this specific carpooling option would operate strictly for women, matching female drivers with female passengers to create a supportive environment focused on safety and peace of mind.
Addressing ongoing harassment issues on public transport
The push comes as sexual harassment remains a widespread complaint among public transport commuters, particularly in overcrowded train carriages.
While female dedicated train coaches have helped address issues on rails, expanding these options to private vehicle platforms aims to offer comprehensive safety for women throughout their journey.
Perfect opportunity for Grab to expand Women-Only Rides

With the Transport Ministry now explicitly encouraging dedicated options, this serves as the perfect opportunity for Grab to polish its existing service and expand it into a full fledged nationwide rollout.
Addressing current limitations in Grab’s beta rollout
Grab quietly launched its Women Only Rides Beta back in March 2026 for female passengers travelling solo or with boys aged 12 and below.
While Grab officially states that the service is restricted to Advance Booking with a minimum 75 minute lead time, our tests proved that instant on demand bookings actually work right away, matching us with a driver in under a minute within the Klang Valley.
However, the feature still suffers from conflicting information and geographic limitations. Grab lists availability in Klang Valley, Johor, and Penang inside its app, yet its official website only mentions Klang Valley. Furthermore, the option disappears entirely from the app once you step outside its service areas.
By taking up Loke’s proposal to integrate a women only carpooling option and official instant bookings across all major states, Grab can eliminate these inconsistencies, streamline its verification process, and establish a far more reliable safety net for female commuters.
