Pakej 5G Rahmah not worth it? Here are better 5G phone and postpaid plan bundle options

As teased over the weekend, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has unveiled the Pakej 5G Rahmah which aims to provide cheaper 5G data as well as a 5G smartphone bundle. Priced at RM60/month just for the postpaid plan itself, the monthly subscription seems to be quite high for the B40 segment. Are there better options in the market? Let’s take a closer look at the current 5G plan offerings and device bundles.

5G Rahmah Postpaid – 60GB for RM60

To recap, the Pakej 5G Rahmah consists of a postpaid plan that offers 60GB of 5G data for RM60/month. There aren’t many details on the plans and the participating telcos such as CelcomDiGi, Maxis, U Mobile, Unifi Mobile and Yes 5G are expected to reveal more information closer to the 31st August 2023 availability date. We still don’t know if voice calls are included and if there are any restrictions like the previously announced Pakej Perpaduan Prepaid that came with a 3Mbps speed cap.

On top of that, Pakej 5G Rahmah allows users to get a brand new 5G smartphone such as the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G or the Honor 90 Lite 5G for RM240 on a 24-month contract. For the first 100,000 customers from the B40 group, the device is offered for only RM120 on the same contract.

Better value 5G phone + postpaid alternatives

If you want to stretch your ringgit further, there are several 5G phone + postpaid plan bundles which offer similar or even greater value than the Pakej 5G Rahmah. Here are some options that you can consider:

Celcom Xpax offers Samsung Galaxy A14 5G for RM199

Celcom’s Xpax is offering the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G for RM199 or the ZTE Blade A73 5G for RM49 on a 24-month contract with Xpax Postpaid 60. However, you’ll have to pay an upfront payment of RM300 during sign up which will be rebated back to your account over 10 months (RM30 x 10 months).

Also priced at RM60/month, the postpaid plan itself currently offers 40GB + 10GB (Bonus 10GB for first 12 months) of high-speed data with unlimited calls to all networks. As an added bonus, the plan also gets unlimited data for YouTube, Facebook and Instagram capped at 6Mbps, which is sufficient for most social content usage. However, if you need 5G, you’ll need to add an RM10 5G booster.

U Mobile Postpaid 68 offers a whopping 100GB of data

The next best option is from U Mobile with their Samsung Galaxy A14 5G and U Postpaid 68 bundle. Although the U Postpaid 68 costs slightly more at RM68/month, the plan is more generous with 100GB of 4G and 5G data, unlimited calls and an additional 15GB of free global roaming which includes free incoming calls.

On a 24-month contract, the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is offered for RM219 on U Mobile, which is slightly cheaper than the Pakej 5G Rahmah offering if you’re not among the first 100,000 B40 consumers to redeem the offer.

Yes 5G offers free phone with unlimited 5G data for RM58/month

Yes 5G probably offers the best value if you want unlimited 5G with a free 5G phone. The Yes Infinite+ Basic bundle at RM58/month provides you with a plan with unlimited 4G and 5G data, unlimited calls and 20GB of hotspot data. What’s more interesting is Yes 5G offers a wider selection of free phones which include the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, Honor 90 Lite 5G, Redmi Note 12 5G, Vivo Y36, Oppo A78 and the Vivo Y55+ 5G. However, take note that the contract is longer at 36 months, but overall, this is still cheaper and offer greater value than Pakej 5G Rahmah.

Cheaper 5G data plans with more quota for less

If you already have a 5G phone and just need a cheaper way to access 5G data, there are plenty of prepaid and postpaid 5G options that offer at least 60GB of 5G data for less than RM40/month.

The first candidate is U Postpaid 38 which offers 60GB of high-speed 4G and 5G data and unlimited calls for only RM38/month. On top of that, you can use the full quota for hotspot usage.

Another great value option is Yes Power 35. Priced at RM35/month, you get 100GB of 4G and 5G data and unlimited calls. If you need to use hotspot, you can fully utilise the 100GB quota for hotspot usage.

For those who don’t really need to hotspot that much, Yes FT5G Prepaid is still one of our recommended 5G plans if want to enjoy 5G for less. For only RM30/month, you get unlimited 5G data with uncapped speeds on your phone, unlimited calls and 12GB of hotspot quota. It also offers unlimited 4G but speeds are capped at 7Mbps. To save even more, you can enable auto-renewal which knocks the price down to just RM25/month.
