Petronas launches Malaysia’s first 5G Private Network in Melaka

Petronas has launched its 5G Private Network at Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka and this is the first 5G Private Network in Malaysia for enterprise use. According to Petronas, the deployment of the 5G private network supported by the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will optimise its operations and induce industry-wide change.

Petronas’ 5G journey started several years ago and it was among the active participants in the 5G Development Projects in 2019. At the time, they have explored several 5G use cases which include fully remote operations which can help reduce hazard risks at offshore facilities while supporting sustainability.

Petronas’ Senior Vice President Project Delivery & Technology, Datuk Bacho Pilong said the 5G Private Network at RGTSU Melaka has improved operational efficiency and safety while supporting its business and sustainable targets.

He added, “Our strategic adoption of 5G technology sets us ahead in the energy industry. By combining 5G with Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and automation, we’re putting Open PETRONAS as among the leaders in the global technological race, while ensuring we meet the demands of supplying safe, reliable, cost-optimised and emission abated energy solutions for Malaysia and our customers globally.”

During the event, he shared that 5G has enabled Petronas to manage their operations from afar with zero delays and has helped to cut down time to collect data by 50%. The deployment has also helped reduce carbon emissions by reducing physical visits.

Besides RGTSU, Petronas wants to enable 5G across its assets in Melaka, Sarawak and Terengganu. It aims to have over 20 5G-enabled offshore assets by 2024. The 5G Private Network is deployed in partnership with TM One and Digital Nasional Berhad.

Today’s event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof. During the event, he shared that Malaysia’s 5G network coverage has reached 70.2% of populated areas as of September 2023. He added there are 2.49 million 5G subscriptions which translates to 7.4% penetration.
