Tesla Centre Cyberjaya: The first of its kind in Malaysia, but what exactly is a Tesla Centre?

Just a few months after Tesla officially announced its arrival in Malaysia by launching the Model Y, the company has since opened its first major facility in the country. Called the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya, the establishment is meant to deliver an “all-in-one experience” to customers according to Tesla’s Regional Director, Isabel Fan.

We were previously not sure if Tesla was able to quickly finish up the renovations at its new Cyberjaya premise but nevertheless, here we are. But then again, what exactly is a Tesla Centre? What makes it different from a traditional car dealership?

If you visit the Find Us section of Tesla’s website, you will not see any facility called “Tesla Centre”. Instead, the list only covers Tesla Stores & Galleries, Tesla Service Centers, Tesla Supercharger, Tesla Destination Charging, and Tesla Collision Centers.

This does not mean the term is new or exclusive to Tesla Centre Cyberjaya though. Case in point: the majority of Tesla retail locations in the United Kingdom are called Tesla Centres.

These locations usually inclusive of a service centre and Tesla Centre Cyberjaya is no different from that aspect.

Tesla Centre Cyberjaya is essentially Tesla’s first 3S/4S centre In Malaysia

From a customer’s standpoint, we don’t see how Tesla Centre Cyberjaya differs that much from a normal 3S (sales, service, spare parts) or 4S (sales, services, spare parts, shop for body & paint) centre.

The first element of the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya that you can actually experience right away is its showroom. Of course, in Tesla’s universe, the showroom is known as the Tesla Experience Centre.

Now open to the public, this is where visitors to the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya can have a hands-on experience with Tesla vehicles although no test drive session will be offered for now. At the moment, only Model Y is available there but Tesla has noted that all trims of the vehicles are being displayed at the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya.

The other elements of Tesla Centre Cyberjaya that are still a work in progress include the delivery and service centre as well as a spare parts warehouse. Isabel noted that the service centre will be ready in time for the first customer deliveries of Model 3 Highland in Malaysia later this year.

As noted in our previous report, Tesla Centre Cyberjaya has also been fitted with 8 Superchargers and 12 Destination Chargers. However, they are not open to the public for the time being and Tesla Malaysia has not yet decided whether to do so in the near future.

Tesla Centre Cyberjaya also contains the beating heart of Tesla Malaysia

So, what really makes the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya different then? I would say it is because the facility also houses the main office of Tesla Malaysia.

Contrary to some early reports, the Tesla Centre Cyberjaya is not the company’s regional office. At least, that is what the company rep told us at the launch event today.

Given that it is the headquarters of Tesla Malaysia, the Cyberjaya location facility also contains workspace areas and training rooms. It even has a 200-seat auditorium for training or engagements that involve bigger audiences.

Not to forget, Tesla Malaysia’s customer support centre is based at Tesla Centre Cyberjaya as well. During her presentation at the launch event today, Isabel made it clear that Tesla Centre Cyberjaya is not a one-off thing. The company is planning to open more Tesla Centres throughout Malaysia although the Regional Director stopped short of revealing any launch timeline or future locations.
