One of Malaysia’s major Charge Point Operators (CPOs), EV Connection (EVC) has recently signed a major partnership with SP Group (SP). The new deal will set the path for a seamless cross-border charging experience through EVC’s JomCharge EV charging network in Malaysia and SP Mobility chargers in Singapore.
Building upon its strength as the owner and operator of the country’s electricity network, SP Group is Singapore’s largest CPO. According to its website, the company currently has more than 1,600 charging points in over 400 locations throughout Singapore.
Phase 1 involves charging credits, starting with GAC Aion EVs
Through the new partnership, Malaysian EV owners can now obtain charging credits for SP Mobility chargers. This way, they can charge their EV over there without the need to have a Singaporean phone number or payment cards.
Likewise, EV owners in Singapore can also purchase charging credits for JomCharge chargers in Malaysia. However, this will only take place at a later time although they can already inform of their interest to SP.
For now, only owners of GAC Aion EVs such as the Aion Y Plus can purchase the SP charging credits. Non-Aion owners can only do so soon although the exact rollout date was not announced by EVC and SP.
The procurement process is still manual though
Meanwhile, the current process to purchase the SP Mobility charging credits through EVC is rather rudimentary. It involves filling up this online form which also asks you to fill in several details regarding your EV including its Vehicle Identification Number.
The company will then get back to you in order to complete the purchase. Furthermore, the FAQ on EVC’s website also said that it takes at least 2 weeks to sort everything out – from setting up the SP app’s account to having the charging credit ready in the app.
In terms of the credit itself, Malaysian EV owners currently have two options:
- 50kWh credit: RM130
- 100kWh credit: RM250
As for validity, the credit can be used within 6 months after it is made available in the app.
Integration with JomCharge and SP apps coming soon
The process of purchasing the credit seems rather tedious at the moment. However, EVC’s representative has informed us that the company is already working to make the process much more seamless soon.
Soon, users from both countries will only have to use either the JomCharge or SP app to locate and activate EV chargers in Malaysia and Singapore. That being said, EVC and SP did not reveal when the integration process is expected to be completed.
