At Malaysia’s first open-to-public EV track day, the SoyaCincau EV Clinic: Track Edition, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N showed what it could do straight out of the box. Driven by SoyaCincau’s Amin Ashaari, the performance SUV recorded a best lap of 2:37.991 around Sepang International Circuit.
The lap was timed using an onboard device rather than Sepang’s official transponder system, which makes it an unofficial time. Even so, it gives a good indication of what the Ioniq 5 N can do in stock form.
That effort made it the second fastest EV of the night, behind only the modified Tesla Model 3 Performance from Exotic Mods (2:34.344). On the official SIC timing sheet, the Ioniq 5 N would have placed fifth overall, less than five seconds off the Tesla, and right in the mix with established ICE cars.
This was Amin’s very first time driving the Ioniq 5 N, with only five laps completed. Even so, the lap was set in completely standard form, right down to the tyres which were not fresh. No suspension tweaks, no brake upgrades, no tyre swap. By comparison, the Tesla was running on semi-slicks, coilovers and a big brake kit.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in Malaysia
The Ioniq 5 N was previewed in Malaysia in 2024 but never officially launched. Sime Darby Auto Hyundai reportedly brought in only three units, all sold via special order. Price? It was speculated to be under RM400k.
Specs wise, Ioniq 5 N produces up to 641hp and 770 Nm with N Grin Boost, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and topping out at 260 km/h. Hyundai also fitted features like N e-Shift (simulated gearshifts) and N Active Sound+ (engine-style sound effects) to give it more of an analogue feel.
The EV Clinic: Track Edition saw close to 30 participants, making it Malaysia’s first proper attempt at gathering EVs on track in an open community setting. With the Ioniq 5 N putting down an 2:37 in stock form and the Tesla posting a 2:34 with upgrades, the event showed that EVs are beginning to carve out a place in the local enthusiast scene.
The event was supported by Tenaga Nasional, EV Connection, Tesmods, F Tuned Racing, Trapo, MG Nizra Auto and Sparklin, with Autel providing on-site battery health checks and EVC supplying mobile DC fast chargers.
