Not iPhone Ultra. Apple’s foldable is called iPhone Duo, and here’s what to expect

When it comes to Apple leaks, few are as reputable as long-time Bloomberg correspondent Mark Gurman. On the eve of Apple’s annual iPhone launch event, Mark has dropped a trove of juicy details—including new information regarding the long-rumoured foldable iPhone.

Interestingly enough, Mark revealed that the foldable iPhone will be called the iPhone Duo—not the “iPhone Ultra,” as previously rumoured for so long.

According to Mark, the base iPhone Duo variant will feature 256GB of storage with a price tag of USD 2,000 (~RM8,136). Naturally, customers can opt for higher storage tiers, with the 2TB variant expected to reach USD 3,000 (~RM12,204).

Unlike standard candybar iPhones, which are expected to launch later this month, the foldable iPhone Duo won’t go on sale until October.

iPhone Duo includes a feature Samsung dropped

iPhone Ultra is already listed on Dbrand’s website, as captured at 3:30 PM today.

In the same report, Mark reconfirmed that the iPhone Duo will sport a “short-and-wide design,” reminiscent of the passport-style form factor seen on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Apple’s debut foldable is also expected to feature:

  • Processor: Apple A20 Pro chip
  • Connectivity: Apple C2 modem
  • Cameras: Dual rear camera setup (48MP main + 12MP ultra-wide/telephoto)
  • Design: Magnetic hinge system

Most notably, the iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil stylus. This is a direct counter-move to Samsung, which famously dropped S Pen support from its foldable lineup starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year to achieve a thinner profile.

Did Apple borrow the name from Microsoft?

The “iPhone Duo” moniker immediately brings to mind a device Microsoft released back in October 2019: the Surface Duo. It makes us wonder if Apple drew a bit of inspiration from its longtime rival, collaborator, and former investor when naming its new flagship.

While both devices were conceived around the idea of expanding screen real estate and boosting multitasking productivity, the execution remains fundamentally different: the iPhone Duo features a continuous flexible display, whereas the Surface Duo relied on a dual-screen hinge design.
