Is BYD Sealion 6 DM-i coming to Malaysia soon?

BYD Sime Motors has published a new post on BYD Cars Malaysia’s social media accounts that appears to tease yet another new model for our market. Based on what we have seen, we believe that it is a reference to the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i.

Why do we think it’s BYD Sealion 6 DM-i?

This is because the font that was used in the teaser is identical to BYD used for Sealion 6 DM-i’s logo. Furthermore, the plug-in hybrid SUV is already available in Singapore, Thailand, and Brunei.

One may argue that BYD used the same font for Seal 6 DM-i and Seal 6 DM-i Touring logos as well. That being said, both of these models, which are about to be launched in Europe, are only available in left-hand drive setups at the moment, while we have yet to see any clear signs that BYD will bring them to Southeast Asia anytime soon.

As for BYD Shark 6, the Chinese giant utilized a different font for the model. Furthermore, the company has reportedly cancelled Shark 6’s rollout in Thailand due to low demand.

In addition to that, Shark 6 has not yet been released in Singapore. While Shark 6 is apparently quite popular in Brunei, we usually look at Thailand and Singapore as rough indicators for upcoming car releases in Malaysia.

The Sealion 6 DM-i is equipped with a naturally-aspirated Xiaoyun 1.5L 4-cylinder engine, which produces 72kW (97hp) and 122Nm of torque. It is being paired with a 145kW (194hp) electric motor that also has a max torque of 300Nm.

The DM-i in its name stands for Dual Mode-intelligent, although the official name of the hybrid system is actually Super DM. In general, the Super DM system prioritises the electric motor until the battery level becomes low.

Once that happens, the HEV series mode will be activated, in which the petrol engine will kick in to act as a generator to the battery that will continue to power the electric motor. In high-speed situations such as highway driving or overtaking, the HEV parallel mode will utilise both the petrol engine as well as electric motor to drive the wheels.

Also equipped with a 60L fuel tank, BYD claimed that Sealion 6 DM-i is capable of delivering over 1,000km of WLTP-rated range. Under the full EV mode, the SUV is able to provide 80km of pure electric range.

Powering the electric motor is an 18.3kWh BYD Blade LFP battery and the hybrid SUV can support a DC charging speed of up to 18kW as well as 7kW AC charging. According to the Singapore’s specs, it takes 2.8 hours of AC charging or 1.3 hours of DC charging to fully charge its battery, although if you are in a hurry, 30 minutes of DC charging is enough to get the battery from 30% to 80%.
