Hong Leong Bank now supports Apple Pay, currently limited to Visa cards

More than 3 years after Apple Pay made its way to Malaysia, Hong Leong Bank (HLB) and Hong Leong Islamic Bank (HLIB) have finally supported the feature. It is the 7th financial institution to support Apple Pay after AmBank, Maybank, Standard Chartered, HSBC, RHB, and Wise.

According to the FAQ on the HLB’s official website, all Visa cards issued by both HLB and HLISB support Apple Pay except for the HLB GSC Gold & Platinum credit cards. The FAQ did not clarify why HLB GSC cards are not able to support Apple Pay, but it did say that the bank will inform customers if there’s any update regarding it in the future.

Apple Pay is also not available for HLB debit cardholders under the age of 16 years old. If you are an HLB or HLIB Mastercard cardholder, tough luck – Apple Pay is not available for you as well, although our quick check on HLB’s website showed that the bank does not have any Mastercard offering at the moment anyway.

Customers can enable Apple Pay for their HLB or HLIB cards by either using the HLB Connect App or the Apple Wallet app on their Apple devices. Do note that the HLB primary and supplementary cards have to be added individually to Apple Wallet if you want to enable Apple Pay for both cards.

Prior to Apple Pay, HLB and HLIB customers that are using an Android device with NFC capability and supports Google Wallet app were already able to use Google Pay. There is also Samsung Pay for customers that are using supported Samsung Galaxy smartphones and wearables.
